Proton-Perodua Merger Welcomed But Can Be A Difficult Process, Says Mahathir PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 August 2010 00:00
SHAH ALAM, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad, who inspired the establishment of Proton in the early 80s, has welcomed the idea of a merger between the national car manufacturer and second national car maker Perodua, but says it could be a difficult process.

He said this is because it involved two separate entities from two different countries and whether Proton Holdings Bhd and Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) would be willing to share trade secrets in the highly-competitive automotive sector.

"They are two different bodies. Proton is a national car company while Perodua is much more of a Japanese company, so whether the Japanese agree or not, is another matter.

"But, we would like to cooperate with these people in the same business as much as possible, and, if we should cooperate, there would be some savings in terms of people who are tasked to do specific things," Dr Mahathir said when asked whether a merger between Proton and Perodua was possible.

He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of the Proton-UTM Professorship Programme on Tuesday.

The first initiative, under the collaboration between Proton and Universiti Technologi Malaysia, involves the attachment of a UTM professor with Proton for two years to strengthen the research capabilities of the national car manufacturer.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Proton advisor, said if the merger goes through both parties can work and share their knowledge but there are certain things the parties involved would want to keep secret.

"Sharing information is always good for the people in the industry, but most industries tend to keep things close to their chest.

"They are not going to tell you their secret and we, of course, would not tell them the entire secret also. So, there must be a good balance and understanding on how much we can tell them and how much we must keep to ourselves," he added.

Proton's Group Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said last Friday valuable feedback from discussions held between the company and Perodua on a possible merger would be forwarded to the government.

He said the government was expected to deliberate on the outcome before making recommendations to the Cabinet by year-end.

Meanwhile, Perodua's Managing Director Aminar Rashid Salleh recently said the company welcomed any form of collaboration with Proton and believed both parties could collaborate in some areas.

"We welcome any form of collaboration with Proton. As you know, we are already a supplier of cylinder heads to Proton and we share some common vendors," Aminar was quoted as saying.

Founded in 1983, Proton was Malaysia's only carmaker until the establishment of its competitor and arch-rival Perodua in 1993.

Khazanah is the biggest shareholder of Proton with 43 per cent stake.

Perodua, is a joint venture company between Malaysian and Japanese partners.

The shareholders are UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd at 38 per cent, MBM Resources Bhd at 20 per cent, Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd at 20 per cent, PNB Equity Resource Corporation Sdn Bhd at 10 per cent, Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at five per cent, Mitsui & Co Ltd at 4.2 per cent and Mitsui & Co (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd at 2.8 per cent.

3 New Volkswagen Models Expected To Roll Out Of DRB-Hicom Plant PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:00
PEKAN, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Three new Volkswagen models are expected to roll out of the DRB-Hicom plant in Pekan, thus strengthening the district's position as a regional automotive hub.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said assemblying of CKD (complete knock down) vehicle components of the renowned German brand would see the vehicles roll out of the plant by the end of the first quarter next year.

He said the joint venture was agreed upon after his meeting with Volkswagen top officials during his overseas holiday recently.

"I've always been monitoring the developments involving DRB-Hicom and during my recent vacation, I took the opportunity to meet the Volkswagen officials and ask them whether they were till keen to establish cooperation with DRB-Hicom.

"Actually, they were waiting for the indication from me whether they could sign the agreement with DRB-Hicom or not," he said in his speech at a Ramadan gathering with DRB-Hicom management and staff, here, Saturday.

Also present was DRB-Hicom Berhad managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil.

Yesterday, DRB-Hicom and Volkswagen signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in the assembly and production of Volkswagen vehicles in Malaysia.

Najib said Volkswagen also requested for incentives from the Malaysian government to make the DRB-Hicom production plant here its export base for the Asean region.

"This needs to be studied and approved by the government," he said.

Najib said the joint venture would also contribute to the success of the East Coast Economic Region's development plan based partly on continuous development of the local automotive industry.

The prime minister then together with over 100 residents performed Tarawih prayers at the Batu 8 mosque, here.
